What Is an Earned Rebate?

An earned rebate is rebate a partner has qualified for by meeting a vendor's program conditions - hitting a target, crossing a threshold, growing year over year - regardless of whether it has been claimed or paid yet. Earned is the true measure of what the partner is owed, and the figure every claim and payment should be checked against.

Why it matters to IT channel partners. Earned is the anchor of the whole audit. Revenue recognition principles say rebate income belongs to the period it was earned, not when the cash arrives. If a partner only knows what was paid, they have no way to tell whether the payment was right. Knowing what was earned - independently calculated from program rules - is what makes every downstream check possible.

When the partner has met the program's qualifying conditions for the period - the targets, thresholds or growth requirements - even if no claim has been filed or payment received.
